The challenge: why pure mechanics for a luxury watchmaker

LED walls and projection are now the default at brand events. For a marque famous for mechanical watchmaking, telling a story of “time and precision” on a screen would undersell the brand. The brief behind the brief: make visitors stop, gather and raise their phones at the centre of the exhibition — without a single screen.

The answer was to enlarge the watch movement itself into an architectural-scale kinetic sculpture: a numbered central disc as the dial, multi-axis mechanical arms as the gear train, carrying Rolex-green glass modules in continuous orbit. The installation doesn’t explain the brand — it speaks the brand’s own language.

Engineering: where 19 days of fault-free operation comes from

Mirror-polished stainless steel is unforgiving — weld distortion, scratches and assembly tolerance are all near zero-tolerance on a mirror surface, so structural parts were precision-machined and pre-assembled for verification at the workshop before reaching the venue.

The multi-axis arms and central disc had to run long continuous cycles in sync. MLABART sized the drivetrain against the full exhibition duty cycle at the mechanism-design stage, left generous margins in motor and transmission selection, and ran full-machine continuous-operation tests before shipping — the precondition for roughly 10 hours a day, 19 days, zero faults on site.

Concept, mechanical engineering, fabrication and on-site installation were delivered by one team, avoiding the rework that comes from splitting creative and engineering across subcontractors.

On-site: installing and running a kinetic piece in a museum-grade show

The piece was installed at West Bund Dome Art Center in Shanghai as the centrepiece of the “Oyster Story” exhibition, commissioned in coordination with the show’s visitor flow and lighting design. It ran about 10 continuous hours daily with MLABART technical support throughout, finishing the run with zero faults.
